What Does God Expect of You?

I’ve been reading “The Hole in Our Gospel”, by Richard Stearns – President of World Vision. He asks a convicting question in his book about the apathy Christians often show to the poor, hungry, and homeless in our world: What does God expect of us? What do you think? What does your Bible say?

About R. Brad White

R. Brad White is the Founder and President of Changing the Face of Christianity Inc. Brad is a former atheist and became an "on fire for God" Christian in 2005. In 2008, Brad became incredibly burdened by what he perceived as a Christian faith far off course, and Christians far from living the teachings of Jesus Christ. In 2010, Brad submitted to the calling to reverse these negative Christian stereotypes, by starting "Changing the Face of Christianity" (a 501c3 Texas non-profit corporation). Read more about R. God expects us to help thise who are in need. the church is so busy doing other things that they forget about the people. Instead of investing in people they invest in things. . Some churches are running a contest on what church looks the best. We need to focus on the people and their needs. Teaching them how to love, stay tuned to the spirit, caring about others, giving and seeking Giod. Teaching people how to pray and wait on God for an answer. God is interested in souls!!!!!

Hey Brad, I have also been thinking a lot about this very subject. I wonder, have you heard of Paul Washer? The reason I ask is because it was him which basically got me to rethink everything I thought I knew of Christianity. As it turns out, I had succumbed to the infamous ‘salvation prayer’ and yet had no change in my life. I had called myself a Christian for 24 years while I drank, smoked pot and partied. As it turns out, the main thing I had been missing was the relationship part. This, more than anything is the thing which I find to be misunderstood by Christians now days. They are convinced the mere prayer has saved them; there is no change in their life, and they go on with it as though this is what the Christian life is. I feel strongly that the devil is deceiving many (and in fact most) of the Christians in the West that they are saved while they are not.

I have found, too, that the obvious reason for all of this is materialism combined with a misunderstanding of grace. Moreover, the fact that the apathetic Christian (who is convinced they don’t need to read their Bible every day) will not figure out that God does not stand for the ‘lukewarm’ Christian. As Wilkerson wrote in his book ‘The Vision and Beyond’ the greatest sin of the future will be simply ignoring God. And this is what I find most Christians do. The world has influenced us so much so that we are believing that what it says is ok. I’d say, in my short time of studying that almost all the things we are exposed to are anti-Bblical. Sitcoms which glorify adultery (and idolatry), violence, and the likes are become more prevalent, and the Christian finds nothing wrong with partaking in watching these. It’s a sad state when people will ignore God for mere entertainment. But that’s just me, and I’m one of the few I guess. (Please note, I do not believe entertainment to be inherently evil but merely that it is all too easy to let it become our god.)

When someone asked Jesus this question, He boiled down the entire Bible to loving God, (the first five Commandments) and loving others (the last five.) If one is truly born again, which is the requirement for entry into heaven, their new heart will naturally love God and others, instead of focusing constantly on self as it did in the former life. The Great Commission, which is the last task Jesus assigned the disciples prior to His leaving earth, illustrates a profound love for God and people.

It is a terrible mistake not to read the entire Bible daily and completely; (not at the same time) what on earth could ever be more important? The Creator of the universe wrote me a love letter but I’m too busy to read it?! Oy vey! The world is in the mess it’s in because there are approximately 6 billion people doing what they think is best when they should be doing what God says is best. He is the Owner who wrote the Owner’s Manual. All praise to the King!

The relationship with God is the most important part of our walk with Him. Praying and speaking to Him every day in our on going life. Praying and asking Him what He wants for us in our lives. Yes, reading the bible is important too…but what about the people in other countries who can’t read or don’t have a bible – they still have a relationship with the Lord and the Holy Spirit is moving there. The lack of the Holy Spirit is evident here in America and I asked a pastor why is that? and He simply said that we are quenching Him. We are too comfortable to have this “easy” “simple” relationship with Christ and not a “radical” relationship with Him. Seeking after and praying and Knocking on His door over and over and over again. He wants to grow us and mold us and that will happen throught the “relationship” with God. God reaches people all over the world even the people that have never heard of Jesus. He speaks to them through visions or dreams and they know He is there and they wait for the person God will send to them. If this person doesn’t haven’t a “strong” relationship with God to hear Him, God will find someone else. He just wants all of us – not part of us or part us when we want to give it to Him – but all of us all time, every minute of every day. Seeking after Him is the only way we will find out what God Expects from us in our life – He has a different plan for us all.

  4. Michael O. AJANI says:

The summation of what God expects from us can be seen from the scripture. The word of God says
“He has showed you O MAN, WHAT IS GOOD AND WHAT DOES THE LORD REQUIRE OF YOU? TO ACT JUSTLY AND TO LOVE MERCY AND TO WALK HUMBLY WITH YOUR GOD” Emphasis mine. Micah 6:8.
From the foregoing, it could be seen that justice which by definition means among others “Conformity to moral rightness in action or attitude; righteousness” living a life free of sin is expected of us. A holy or sanctified life, separated unto God.
When we talk of mercy, we’re talking of everything that has to do with work of righteousness which Christ talks about in Matthew 25. 31-46; feeding the hungry, drinks to the thirsty, hospitality to strangers, clothing the naked visiting the sick and helping them on the hospital beds, as well as the prisoners. Helping the poor.
Walking humbly with God is Humility, which is the attitude of Christ which must be seen in us.
And also make the whole world know of the love of Christ for all. As said in Matthew 28:19-20. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen. The totality of the above and much more are the expectation of God from us. God will help us to meet this expectation in this changing world of sin and uncertainty.
