Praying with Your Eyes Closed

Why do we pray with our eyes closed? Is it wrong to pray with your eyes open? Why/why not?

  1. Loran Yunevich says:

I believe we pray with our eyes closed thinking it makes the pray more Holy and pleasing to our Father in heavon. I do not believe it matters if you pray with your eyes open or closed. What matters is that you pray with a clean heart using 1john 1:9 so that the action of Psalm 66:18 will not take place. When we have sin in our hearts, God will not hear our prayers. We will still be connected to God but our communications line will be broken. May God bless you in your questions so that lke the rest of us you can grow in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour.

  2. Tony Barbeau says:

In heaven in the presence of The Lord will we all have our eyes closed bumping into one another….. I close my eyes to close out the things of this world and more focus on Him, but most times I pray with eyes wide open.

  3. Interesting question. I think we are accustomed to praying with our heads bowed traditionally, in reverence but I think closing eyes is just a personal preference. I close my eyes to focus on my inner spirit. Sometimes I sing in church with my eyes closed too, b/c otherwise I get distracted by mentally critiquing, thinking, or being awed by powerpoint shows, lights, or what someone is wearing. Closing my eyes helps me focus my worship on Him.

  4. WOW! I’ve never actually thought about that! When I pray I usually focus on my hands being in the right position then my eyes close and my head bows automatically as my thoughts turn inward and my focus shifts from the external world to the Almighty. However, if I’m just pondering things about God my eyes are open and they drift upward and my head tilts and I can practically see the thought bubble above my head! Also, when I’m just jibber-jabbering to God about whatever (like venting when I’m super mad about something) I tend to keep my eyes open because I usually talk out loud to him when I’m alone driving in my car…and I think the other drivers would appreciate that.

JR I agree with you. Keeping your eyes open while driving (and praying) is wise advice! :-) . Your hands should also be in the 2 and 10 position. I don’t recommend hands in the air praying either while driving. :-)

  5. A leader of short term youth missions always advises the teen to pray with their eyes open, especially when they are praying for a miracle. When God performs your asked for miracle you want to see it happen.

  6. I do it with my eye’s open and its all the same. Many shut there eyes to shut out the world while they do so and concentrate. Its your prerogative really.

  7. By habit and tradition became accustomed to praying with eyes closed, but found that in some times of prayer, when genuine, have found when finished that my eyes were open and didn’t realize it and it didn’t matter while praying. Questions of physical posture and mechanics are secondary. . . what good is it to bow my head if not humble at heart? Is prayer merely a habit or is it vital communion in spirit with the living God? Am I praying to God or have I come to Him? Prayer as habit alone is always a wakeup call that there is more.
