Why Are Some Christians So Serious?

I could be called a serious guy for sure. I work hard and I play hard. But I can also laugh at myself and the world around me. But why is it that some people just can't take a joke? Life is mean to be lived with Joy (fruit of the spirit). That's pretty tough to do when everything is a serious matter. … [Read more...]

Where Are the Christmas and Easter Christians?

It was an amazing Easter church service last week. Tons of people showed up. It reminded me of the Christmas service. It reminded me how each year a significant portion of the body of Christ shows up for Christmas and Easter services to enjoy Christian fellowship, and praise and worship the Creator and Savior of the world…Jesus Christ. It also reminded me that the rest of the year these "Christians" will be gone without a trace. A couple questions are racing through my head. Why do they … [Read more...]

The Cure from Feeling Disconnected from God

Sometimes people feel disconnected from God. I hear people pray, "Lord, why are you so distant?" If you read the Psalms you'll see a cycle of appeals to God such as Psalm 10:1, "Why, Lord, do you stand far off? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?". What does this say about God and us? This says more about us and our insufficient perspective than it does about God. Our Christian theology affirms a belief in God's "omnipresence". Omnipresence means present everywhere at the same time. … [Read more...]

No One Even Noticed I left!

One theme I occasionally hear when talking with Ex-Christians and atheists is how when they left the church, no one even noticed. And when I say “left the church”, it initially could be for non-spiritual reasons such as a job change or a cross country move. It can also be for spiritual reasons such as dissatisfaction with or disagreement with their current church. Everyone wants to feel like they are important and are missed. But when people don’t notice, it leaves an empty feeling in … [Read more...]

A Tale of Two Christians

I want to briefly share a story of two Christians. Similar to the story of the prodigal son, this story is intended to be a parable for us to learn an important lesson about living our faith.  There was once two Christians. One was a man of God. Not a priest or anything, just a normal man that sought after God and his ways daily. He had a friend who was also a Christian. However, this second man was far from God.  The First Man Everyday, the two would go about their work, to earn a … [Read more...]

Should Christians Boycott Halloween?

Should Christians boycott Halloween? No! Let me explain. I’m sure some of you will disagree…and if so, I’d love to hear your comments. And I hope you don’t mind us taking a lighthearted look at this annual Halloween tradition. But, my arguments rest on the real Biblical questions: Is participating in or celebrating Halloween, in any way serving, honoring, glorifying, or holding up as an idol, a false God? Are we participating in a pagan ritual that dishonors God? My answer is … [Read more...]

Why Haven’t More People Become Christians?

Karen Brooks Smith

Sometimes as I walk through this life I am dumbfounded by the ways the Bible does not match up with the Christians I see around me. Most importantly, many times this realization is made when I am looking in the mirror.  It all became even more confusing to me when I heard this statement: "Why haven’t more people become Christians? Is it because they have never met a Christian… or because they have?" Examples of failures It is the last part of the statement that is haunting me. Why are we … [Read more...]

An Atheist Call for Christian Compassion

Joel Justiss

A Christian Beginning-Finding My Purpose I learned compassion from my parents. Inspired by experience as a houseparent in an orphans' home, my father made a career in child welfare. When I was a child, many of our dinner-table conversations began with a story of an abused or neglected child. One of my father's favorite scriptures was James 1:27 (NLT), "Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world … [Read more...]

Open Letter to Christians from a Reasonable Non-Theist

Christian Face

Changing the Face of Christianity Introduction We recently received a letter from a "reasonable" non-theist, that we thought was worth sharing with our readers. When I say "reasonable", I mean he is simply sharing his opinions on the topics we are passionate about. He isn't telling us we are wrong or stupid, he isn't suggesting we throw aware our Bible, and he isn't attempting to discredit our beliefs. He is just sharing HIS perspective on the issues. I think there are things we can learn … [Read more...]
